Two millennia under one name

Between c. 5050 and 2950 BCE, communities from the Eastern Carpathians to the Dnieper repeatedly changed the scale of settlements, ceramic techniques, relations with land and treatment of the dead.

“There is a Borges-like dreaminess to the Cucuteni pottery sequence.”

David W. Anthony arrives at this line after a page of anomalies: Cucuteni C names a pottery type, Cucuteni A1 was defined before discovery and never found, and A5 was proposed in 1963 as a challenge to future researchers. The joke captures a genuine problem. A scheme built from pottery came to carry two millennia of regional change. S01 S21

01 · Names made by research

Cucuteni and Trypillia entered archaeology along different routes.

The type-sites lie in Romania and Ukraine. The hyphen joins research traditions that divided the territory into phases, groups and regional variants.

The Ukrainian place-name Трипілля appears here as Trypillia. Romanian Tripolia and Tripolye, which renders Russian Триполье, occur widely in older publications. The locality lies in the Kîiv region. S41

Natalia Burdo examines unity and diversity across eastern and western traditions through ceramic assemblages, settlements and classification histories. At Dealul Mănăstirii, 1.5 km from Cetățuia, Romanian excavations documented a secondary Cucuteni A3 settlement with a house, pits and its own object assemblage. S23 S24 S42

02 · Two millennia

Settlement scale changed several times.

A published inventory for Trypillia territory in Ukraine gathers 1,064 sites. Areas are known for 374 permanent settlements. Phase-level values trace expansion, aggregation and dispersal, with uneven research coverage and measurement precision. S17

What radiocarbon changes

Typology traces relationships among forms and decoration. Radiocarbon dates test their position in time. At Stăuceni–Holm, the published model places activity in the 40th–39th centuries BCE and moves Cucuteni A3 later than some previous schemes. S03

Regional studies produce finer sequences for groups such as Sabatynivka and Chechelnyk. A Ukrainian synthesis of BII–CI between the Southern Buh and Dniester follows distribution, plans, ceramics, economy and contacts as a coherent regional history. S25 S43 S02

03 · Settlements compared

Six large buildings drawn at the same scale.

The published comparison brings together Baia–În Muchie, Nebelivka, Maidanetske, Dobrovody, Ripiceni–Holm and Stăuceni–Holm. Their forms, positions and dimensions support distinct local histories. S03

Baia–În Muchie

The central structure measures about 220–230 m². More than 200 reconstructable vessels were recovered inside.

c. 3990/3840–3850/3740 BCE

Nebelivka

The 1,120 m² mega-structure measures 60.5 × 18.3 m and has several construction phases.

Maidanetske

The c. 170 ha settlement includes about 2,930 houses and 13 mega-structures.

Dobrovody

The 26 × 46 m anomaly covers 1,196 m². Excavation sampled 144 m²; an open enclosure remains among the interpretations.

Ripiceni–Holm

The estimated 722–1,000 m² structure lies in a site heavily eroded by the Prut. The date comes from one sample. S38

40th–39th centuries BCE

Stăuceni–Holm

The 4 ha plateau preserves at least 45 buildings. The c. 350 m² structure has been partly excavated.

04 · The mega-site episode

Around 4000 BCE, aggregation changed the scale of life.

Magnetometry has revealed thousands of burned buildings arranged in rings, neighbourhood groups, radial corridors and central open spaces. The largest mapped plans exceed 250 ha. S05 S06

Occupation models differ. Some reconstruct permanent populations in the thousands; others propose periodic assembly, occupation distributed through time, or changing combinations. Deposits, refuse density, house sequences and farming traces provide the crucial tests. S05 S06 S10

At Maidanetske, the roughly 2,930 houses belong to the full built history of the site. Population in a particular decade depends on the sequence of each house and household size. Construction sequences and refined dating continue to narrow that range. S04 S09

05 · A house built for an experiment

At Nebelivka, fire became measurable.

In 2014 the project team built two houses at two-thirds scale, each with a 4 × 3 m footprint. One had a single storey and the other two. The two-storey house was burned in May 2015. S11

The experiment demonstrated that this type of house could burn completely through a prepared effort using abundant fuel and sustained airflow. Archaeological traces vary among houses and settlements. Accidents, conflict, abandonment and closure practices are evaluated through each building's context. S11 S37

06 · Food, animals, land

Life in a large settlement began in the fields.

Plant remains from 34 sites show cereals and pulses integrated with animal husbandry. Manure sustained fertility, while cattle, sheep, goats and pigs occupied different places in household economies. S08

At Kosenivka, the isotopic food-web model assigns cereals a large share of human dietary protein, while meat supplied less than 10%. The result belongs to the sampled context dated 3700–3600 BCE. S07

At Maidanetske, isotopes in animal teeth indicate differentiated pasture use and herd management around a large community. These data bring households, seasons and travel distances into the discussion of urbanism. S09

07 · A house with seven people

Kosenivka joins food, illness, trauma and fire in one context.

House 6 lay within a settlement of about 80 ha, dated 3700–3600 BCE. Research identified at least seven people among burned and unburned bones, including children and adults. Two skulls preserve trauma at or near the time of death. S07

Fatal fire

Some bodies were present when the house burned. Thermal change and trauma make this scenario plausible.

Earlier deposits

Human remains placed earlier may have been affected by the later burning of the building.

Mortuary fire

Burned and unburned bones may join different treatments and depositional histories.

The authors compare these scenarios through bone condition, fragment locations, temperature and dating. They give substantial probability to a fatal fire while keeping the assemblage's formation history open. Verteba Cave offers another mortuary archive, with repeated deposits and individuals used in isotopic and genomic work. S07 S13 S36

08 · Biological histories

Genomes preserve encounters among communities.

Four women from late Cucuteni–Trypillia contexts in the Republic of Moldova carry a major ancestry component related to Neolithic farmers. Three also carry steppe-related ancestry in differing proportions. S12

Individuals from Verteba Cave widen the view: Neolithic farmers, European hunter-gatherers and steppe-related groups contributed in varied combinations. Broader studies from southeastern Europe place these contacts within mobility beginning before the large changes of the third millennium BCE. S13 S14 S35

Each result belongs to a dated person and a statistical model using reference populations. Language, social kinship and political belonging require other archives. Archaeological context joins a genome to a situated life.

09 · Objects

Form, technique and findspot work together.

Pigments, kilns, use traces and context turn a beautiful vessel into an archaeological document. Analyses identify iron-rich reds and dark pigments based on iron or manganese; individual sites preserve local recipes and choices. S18 S19 S20 S22

10 · After the mega-sites

During the centuries after 3600 BCE, networks reorganised.

Very large settlements contracted, and phase CII contains more small and medium communities. Mortuary practices become more visible in some regions. Contacts with steppe groups appear in objects, mobility and genomes. S12 S15 S17

Environmental studies trace changes in vegetation, climate and land use through distinct regional histories. Work at Nebelivka finds detectable human impact and lacks the signal of a local ecological catastrophe created by one enormous occupation. S10 S26

People continued to move, establish households, exchange technologies and bury their dead in new ways. Archaeological labels close more cleanly than these lives.

11 · Modern stories

Superlatives made Cucuteni easy to love and hard to understand.

“The oldest civilization”, “peaceful matriarchy” and “the first writing” circulate because they give a powerful name to beauty and absence. Public examples document that reception; archaeological research supplies the comparisons and contexts. M01 M02 M03

Antiquity

The historical question grows richer through comparisons among settlement forms, institutions and precise chronologies.

Figurines

Represented gender, use and deposition are studied separately. Naming a deity requires an archive beyond the object alone.

Signs

Repetition shows learned practice. Their relationship to language remains a question requiring demonstration.

12 · Shared heritage

The archive is divided among Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

All three countries have placed Cucuteni–Trypillia components on UNESCO Tentative Lists. Ukrainian sites, collections and researchers work under the pressure of war, occupation and interrupted research. Protecting contexts and crediting local institutions belong to the accuracy of this history. S27 S28 S29
