What evidence permits
The phrase ‘oldest civilization’ mixes several archaeological measures: cities, states, writing, social complexity and chronological priority. Europe also had earlier farming communities.
Supported account
A better sentence: between about 5050 and 2950 BCE, communities across today’s Romania, Moldova and Ukraine built an unusually long-lived and internally diverse world of settlements, exchange, farming and painted pottery.
Why the story endures
The formula gives a neglected past the dignity people feel it deserves. The desire is understandable; the superlative is too blunt.
